Take your stone-setting skills further with this focused one-day workshop on claw (prong) setting.

Working on a brass practice model with CZ stones, you’ll learn the full process behind a secure, well-finished claw setting. You’ll start by assessing the setting, then move through marking out, cutting the seats, setting the stone and finishing the claws neatly. You’ll take your practice model home at the end of the day so you can keep refining your technique.

The day focuses on fine burr control with a micromotor. You’ll learn how to hold and brace the handpiece, choose the right burr for the claw and stone, and cut clean, even seats without overcutting or letting the burr run away from you.

Over the day, you’ll learn how to:

•      Read a setting before you start, checking claw height, spacing and alignment

•      Mark out seat heights so every claw matches

•      Hold and brace the micromotor for steady, confident burr control

•      Cut clean, level seats that fit the stone snugly

•      Drop the stone in and check it sits level with no gaps

•      Push the claws over in opposing pairs to lock the stone in place

•      Trim, shape and polish the claws for a crisp, professional finish

•      Spot and fix common problems, from a tilted stone to a loose one

This is a hands-on, technique-focused workshop designed to give you the confidence to apply claw setting to your own jewellery projects.

Level: Intermediate to Advanced only

Duration: One full day

Materials: Brass practice model and CZ stones provided

Take home: Your brass practice model, so you can keep practising,

Who Should Attend:

This workshop is not suitable for beginners. Participants should already have previous jewellery making skills, including sawing, filing, drilling and soldering, and be comfortable working accurately with small metal components. Some experience with a micromotor or flex shaft is helpful.

The focus of the day is on stone-setting technique and burr control, not on introductory jewellery making.
