Discover the beautiful and intricate art of cloisonné enamelling in this immersive two day, hands on workshop.
Cloisonné is a traditional enamelling technique in which fine metal wires are shaped and secured onto a metal surface to create individual compartments (cloisons). These compartments are then filled with finely ground vitreous enamel, creating vibrant areas of colour separated by delicate metal outlines. Once fired, the enamel transforms into a smooth, glass-like surface, revealing the intricate design.
Over two days, you will be introduced to the fundamentals of this fascinating technique, from preparing your metal surface and designing your composition to shaping, positioning and attaching fine wires. You will learn how to work with enamel powders, build up layers of colour and manage the firing process to achieve beautiful, luminous results.
Through demonstrations and guided practical exercises, you will explore the relationship between line, colour and composition while developing your own cloisonné design. You will gain an understanding of the technical considerations involved in working with fine wires and enamel, including how to achieve clean boundaries, consistent colour and a successful final finish.
By the end of the workshop, you will have created your own cloisonné enamel piece and gained the foundational skills to continue exploring this intricate and rewarding technique.
No previous enamelling experience is necessary. This workshop is suitable for beginners as well as jewellery makers and metalworkers interested in expanding their skills and exploring new ways of introducing colour into their work.
Join us for two days of experimentation, patience and discovery, and experience the magic of transforming metal and powdered glass into colourful miniature artworks!
