Explore the traditional jewellery technique of star setting in this focused two-day hands-on workshop.

Working on copper practice sheets with CZ stones, you’ll learn how to plan, prepare and execute a series of star set stones. You’ll learn how to create clean, consistent settings while working with small stones and fine details.

A key part of the workshop is learning to use a traditional hand push engraving tool (graver). You’ll learn how to hold it correctly, use it safely, and build good technique from the start. You’ll also shape, sharpen and refine your own graver for setting work, and take it home with you to keep practising.

Over the two days, you’ll learn how to:

•      Shape and sharpen your own graver

•      Hold and use a hand push graver safely and with good technique

•      Refine your hand control and make clean, precise cuts through guided practice

•      Plan and mark out a star-setting layout

•      Space stones evenly and accurately

•      Prepare the metal and create accurate stone seats

•      Set CZ stones securely into copper

•      Cut and raise beads around the stones

•      Build accuracy and consistency when working with multiple small stones

This workshop focuses on technique. It is designed to build your confidence with star setting and with using the graver. The copper practice pieces let you concentrate on your skills before you move on to precious metals.

Level: Intermediate to Advanced only

Duration: Two full days

What is included: all consumables, materials and light refreshment

Materials: Copper practice sheet, CZ stones and beading tools provided

Take home: Your own shaped and sharpened graver

Who Should Attend:

This workshop is not suitable for beginners. Participants should have prior jewellery making experience and be confident with basic hand skills, including sawing, filing and drilling. You should also be comfortable working accurately with small components and hand tools.

The workshop focuses on star-setting technique, use of the traditional hand push engraving tool and precise hand skills, not on introductory jewellery making.
