Have you ever wanted to create your own unique and personalized ring by carving wax? Join us for an exciting journey into the world of wax carving, where you'll learn the traditional techniques of shaping and sculpting wax to create stunning rings. In this hands-on class, you'll be guided step-by-step through the process of transforming a block of wax into a beautiful custom ring design.

Wax carving is one of the most widely used techniques in jewellery making. It is suitable for complete beginners as well as experienced jewellers, as it is relatively fast, accurate, and can be learned fairly quickly. The wax carving process is relaxing and meditative, allowing for the creation of interesting 3D organic forms without much metal waste. Additionally, wax-carved models can serve as prototypes until the jewellery piece is finalized.

Course Objectives:

Fundamentals of Wax Carving: Learn about the different types of wax used in jewellery making, tools and equipment needed for wax carving, and safety precautions.

Wax Carving Techniques: Master essential wax carving techniques including shaping, carving, filing, and finishing to bring your design to life.

Creating Texture and Detail: Experiment with various tools and methods to add texture, patterns, and intricate details to your ring design, allowing you to express your creativity.

Sizing and Fitting: Understand how to properly size and fit your ring to ensure comfort and wearability.

Finishing: Learn the final steps of finishing your wax ring to achieve a professional-quality finish.

Casting: Gain an overview of the casting process, including preparing the wax model for casting and the various casting methods available. We will send your wax ring to the casting house, collect it, and finish it for you. Subsequently, we will send you the finished silver (brass or gold – your choice) ring back to you via express post. You will receive your finished ring, ready to wear, in about 2-3 weeks since completing the workshop.

Troubleshooting and Problem-Solving: Develop problem-solving skills to address common challenges encountered during the wax carving process.

This class is suitable for beginners with no prior experience in wax carving or jewellery making, as well as hobbyists and enthusiasts looking to expand their skills in ring making. Artists, designers, and anyone interested in creating custom jewellery pieces will find this class inspiring and informative.

Outcome:

By the end of the course, participants will have completed their own hand-carved wax ring ready to be sent off for casting. They will also have gained a solid foundation in wax carving techniques and the confidence to continue exploring the art of wax carving jewellery on their own.

Included in the program:

All wax and carving tools will be provided. Participants are welcome to bring any additional tools or design inspirations they may have.

Not included in the program:

Cost of casting wax ring into precious metal is not included and this will be calculated on the day.

Please come to class dressed appropriately:

Clothing: Wear garments made of natural materials, such as cotton, wool, rayon, or linen. Synthetic fibers are not allowed. Your attire should include long pants, a shoulder-covering T-shirt, and well-fitting clothing. Avoid loose garments, shorts, skirts, and tank tops.

Footwear: Always wear fully enclosed shoes. Sandals, flip-flops, high heels, and platform shoes are not permitted.

Hair: Ensure that long hair is securely tied back.
Jewellery: Remove all jewellery from your hands, including rings and bracelets. Avoid wearing long necklaces and earrings.

Accessories: Do not wear hats, earphones, headphones, scarves, or similar items while working in the workshop.

Minimum Numbers

This class requires a minimum of four students to go ahead. In the unlikely event minimum numbers are not reached, we will contact you with alternative dates to reschedule your booking.

Cancellation & Rescheduling

Due to limited availability in our private and group classes, all bookings are non-refundable. Rescheduling is also not possible, as the logistical arrangements and personalized focus of each class cater to small groups. The Metal Space is required to pay tutor fees regardless of attendance. If you fail to attend or miss your scheduled booking, you will not be eligible for a refund.

In the event this class is cancelled by The Metal Space for unforeseen reasons, the class fee will be refunded to the students.

Refunds are processed promptly by The Metal Space however we are not able to determine how long the financial institution may take to transfer. Please allow up to 10 business days for the refund to be processed. 

Make up classes

If a class is missed for any reason, a make-up session cannot be offered. As a small school with a limited number of classes, we are unable to accommodate or cover the cost of a tutor for make-up sessions.
