Class Description

When: Thursdays

Duration: 6.30pm - 9.30pm

Dates:  Thursdays 13/02 - 27/03/25 (Total 7 Weeks)

Teacher: Radka Passianova

This course is tailored for individuals intrigued by crafting larger-scale objects. It welcomes complete beginners without prior metalworking experience and those with existing metal forming skills.

Complete beginners will learn raising a beaker. Raising is a traditional silversmithing technique that enables artisans to shape a metal sheet into a vessel or object by accurately hammering it using an array of hammers on wooden or metal stakes.

Students who have already completed the raising class with us will bring their own design to create, whether it is a box, platter, bowl, or a small sculpture. Consultation about the design prior to the commencement of the course is essential to ensure that students can order the materials and consumables needed for the class.

Class Highlights:

Skill Progression: Throughout the course, students will grasp the fundamental theory behind working with metal sheets and develop practical abilities in forming and finishing it. Techniques covered include annealing, soldering, sinking, raising, planishing, saw piercing, filing, and emerying.

Hands-on Experience: Led by an instructor with years of dedicated experience, this class ensures a focused learning environment, limited to a maximum of 5 students.

What's Included:

Beginner students will receive consumables and a 1.2 mm thick, 200 x 200mm gilding metal sheet. They'll learn to raise it into a small conical or straight-wall beaker.

Advanced students designing their own object will have to bring in their own materials and consumables.

Please come to class dressed appropriately:

Clothing: Wear garments made of natural materials, such as cotton, wool, rayon, or linen. Synthetic fibers are not allowed. Your attire should include long pants, a shoulder-covering T-shirt, and well-fitting clothing. Avoid loose garments, shorts, skirts, and tank tops.

Footwear: Always wear fully enclosed shoes. Sandals, flip-flops, high heels, and platform shoes are not permitted.

Hair: Ensure that long hair is securely tied back.
Jewellery: Remove all jewellery from your hands, including rings and bracelets. Avoid wearing long necklaces and earrings.

Accessories: Do not wear hats, earphones, headphones, scarves, or similar items while working in the workshop.
